Jan. 7th, 2023 11:49 pmNot even a week into 2023 and the Holmes/Watson shippers are already driving me up the wall. Though to be honest they were driving me up the wall within about 12 hours into 2023. Or you know, just in general. I'm all for saying fuck the Conan Doyle Estate Ltd (fuck the Conan Doyle Estate Ltd!) but this is exactly what I knew would happen once the final US copyright expired, the Holmes/Watson shippers would increase the annoyance factor many times over (especially when this happened at the same time as that Letters From Watson thing started). Aside from the very obviously straight usually men who come out with most of the already published analysis of the canon and the published pastiches, all the fandom cares about anyway is Holmes/Watson and usually trying to """prove""" Holmes/Watson is canon, very often at the expense of other characters and pairings and often by coming out with total bullshit to try to """prove""" it. (Gay men were not executed for being gay in the 1880s and 1890s in the UK! How many times have I got to see people claim this as fact, something which a three second google search would inform them is not only incorrect but out by decades! Also they're still ignoring the homophobic stuff Arthur Conan Doyle came out with I see.) I am so tired of at best pretty much every other character and relationship in the canon being completely erased and ignored and at worst (and this really does happen a lot) being used solely to try to 'prove' Holmes/Watson or being shit on in some significant way to make Holmes/Watson happen. Do you know how tempted I am to try to write and publish this fiction with Moriarty and Moran (and Moriarty/Moran) and probably a bunch of other canonical characters in and never even mention Holmes or Watson and their relationship no not even once? I am so goddamned tempted to do that. Although of course supposing I did ever manage to do that nobody would actually give a fuck about it without Holmes/Watson in it.
I read another published story recently that (sort of) had Moriarty and Moran in it and as expected it was largely a waste of my time - all about Mycroft and from his POV and where I'm clearly meant to support Mycroft and hate Moriarty and Moran. I don't care about Mycroft and find him a far more questionable character than Moriarty or Moran, and I do not hate them. What I do hate though it that the only way that I'm ever going to see published stories about them that portrays them well and in the right way is if I publish them myself (and that would be on top of the well over half a million words I've already had to write about them because nobody else writes about them).
