Finished watching Whitechapel series 3. I do hate hate hate the series ending so much, Morgan was lovely and she deserved so much better than to die anyway and to die in that way and for her death to be used basically just to cause pain to Chandler (I like Chandler a lot but they really just fridge Morgan so they can make him suffer more).
In conclusion: though I still really love some of the interaction between Chandler and Miles especially in series 3, there's too much in it I really don't like or want to rewatch again so I don't think I'm keeping this DVD.

I'm rewatching Whitechapel series 3 and in some ways it does remind me of Midsomer Murders - obviously with the murders (there are a lot in Whitechapel too) and I like the main detective and I like the dynamic he has with other members of the team especially his sergeant and there's the vaguely supernatural elements in Whitechapel (meanwhile ghosts are basically a canonical fact in Midsomer Murders) (also of course there's a lot of crossover with actors). But Whitechapel isn't... fun. It's dark and often gruesome and people are tortured and murdered in very horrible ways and I feel so sorry for most of the victims. Midsomer Murders is tongue in cheek and sure it can be darker sometimes but it's not like Whitechapel darkness and many of the people who die in Midsomer Murders aren't great people anyway. I do kind of wish Whitechapel was just like... about the main characters without all the innocent people dying in horrible ways (also female characters being fridged, essentially) and without the vaguely supernatural thing. Series 1 (which I rewatched last week) still works for me but I'm finding all the murders in series 3 too much (I don't have series 2 and have never rewatched it, I didn't like the whole Krays copycat thing even when it was on TV, and I pretty much hated most of series 4 full stop).
Also some of series 3 doesn't really make sense, like you've got a supposed Jack the Ripper and Victorian era crime expert who doesn't seem to know anything about male poisoners or very much about the Thames Torso Murders. Cream; Pritchard; Palmer; Chapman - they were all male poisoners and some of those were (tenuously) connected to Jack the Ripper, but they're ignored while poison is claimed to be only a woman's method of killing. Overlooking Cream in particular doesn't make sense since the way the victims are killed in Whitechapel has very strong echoes of Cream's murders. And the Torso murders... Buchan only seems to know anything about that after he looks it up within the show but he should already know all about that; this was probably a second serial killer operating pretty much at the same time as 'Jack' and someone whose crimes were linked by people at that time to 'Jack', an expert 'Ripperologist' should already know far more about it than he seems to know surely.
Really it's a show I've got such mixed feelings about, and where after series 1 at least the elements I enjoy don't really make up for the bits I don't like. :/
