I'm so glad I never gave a shit about joining that Letters from Watson thing as even without participating in it this is the second time I've seen someone post something about it that's just incorrect and actually has canonical evidence to prove they're wrong, someone else in a friendly and not condescending way comment about this and the original person just fly off the handle about it for no reason at all, start being all snide and condescending in return and throw a massive tantrum over it. They start screaming about "Holmes know it alls jumping on them" and blathering on about things the other people never said or did at all and with the other one too it was them raging about "spoilers!" and how this person is 'ruining everything for all the Letters from Watson participants' when, uh, 1 what the person said wasn't even a spoiler, 2 it's a like 100 year old story are we really still going to be pulling the 'spoilers!' card after a fucking century, really?, 3, it was a reply on a post that barely anyone would see and 4 that story they referred to is not even being included in Letters from Watson anyway.

Me watching from the sidelines: are you OK

May 4th AKA the worst day to be in any way associated with the Sherlock Holmes fandom AKA the day when everyone else decides to celebrate the supposed death of my joint favourite character. Like the fandom isn't insufferable enough about hating my favourite characters even at the best of times.
(Second worst specific day is January 6th when everyone decides to celebrate Holmes' birthday as if it's canon when it's a non-canonical idea based on complete nonsense and makes no more sense than most of the other shit peddled as canonical fact by muppets like Baring-Gould)

Related to my last post, this is the thing, that the Sherlock Holmes fandom has gone out of its way to shit on every single character and relationship I care about and it's been doing this for probably most of the time a Sherlock Holmes fandom has existed. I mean before it was all online stuff it was the Sherlock Holmes 'scholars' writing their books and essays and claiming the most ridiculous crap and that absolutely included demeaning and insulting Moriarty (and Moran when they bothered to remember Moran existed) and Godfrey Norton and Mary Watson and even when not outright shitting on Irene portraying her really badly and totally out of character. Now we get that and the online stuff too.
They hate Moriarty, they hate Moran, they hate Moriarty/Moran and go out of their way to claim that they hate each other to the point where one of them is going to murder the other, they hate Mary, they seem to be incapable of praising Violet Hunter without shitting on Irene Adler in the same breath (the number of times I have seen someone talk about how amazing Violet is and then swiftly say basically Irene Adler is shit by comparison is absurd), they hate Godfrey Norton, they hate Irene/Godfrey Norton.
When I stopped wanting to use tumblr really at all initially a few months back (even before the shit with the pro-Putin assholes) it was because, yet again, someone was insulting Moriarty and Adler and basically saying they don't need to be in anything ever any more and people talking about how basically the Holmes and Watson relationship is the only important thing and the only thing that should be used or centred despite there being fucking millions of things about that damned relationship meanwhile what do the rest of us who care about other characters and relationships get? Sweet fuck all that's what. (And what the hell is with this idea that if you decide to quash the Holmes/Adler ship that means just erasing Irene Adler entirely? These people who actually hate Holmes/Adler still literally cannot seem to conceive of Adler just... existing. I remember before when someone said basically like 'I hate the way Adler has been used always as Holmes's love interest so she's not appearing in my story'. Uh, you can include her not as Holmes's love interest? You know like Arthur Conan Doyle managed to do.)
Now it's this 'Irene is a lesbian' shit being used, yet again, to shit on Irene/Godfrey and just generally shitting on Godfrey too. Irene explicitly says she loves and is loved by him, it is right there in the canon! Also this does have really biphobic vibes when she literally says she loves him. There's no way I'm buying Irene as straight but she likes men, she loves men, she has probably fucked men too. This is just the same bullshit from the Sherlock fandom all over again where people kept on trying to insist then just because Adler was (probably) a (badly portrayed) lesbian in that crappy show that she's a lesbian in the canon. Meanwhile I have seen people talk positively about Godfrey like... three times in my entire life (and portray him well in fiction probably once, in a series I don't like to the point where I had to give up reading it after the third book and donated them all to the charity shop), while I have seen people insulting him and his relationship with Irene over and over and over again.
I will genuinely fight people over Godfrey Norton I swear (including Baring-Gould. Fuck Baring-Gould)

First time I bother to check it since the last round of bullshit on there and I find this garbage in my tracked tags: "I am reeling from the fact that the gothic fiction tumblr fandom is currently elevating the shit out of Norton, a completely nothing background character in a Sherlock Holmes story, only because he MIGHT love his wife back"
"Anyway Irene Adler is a lesbian and Norton was her comphet crush she got divorced from."

Shut the fuck up!
