I think I might have finally answered the question of 'where the hell is this place that is the only place I've ever been that absolutely felt haunted to me'. I think it's Burton Constable Hall.
It was somewhere I went with my family as a child and all I knew was it had a riding school, like an old indoor school, which was fine, but then when we went in the actual house all I remember of that is this feeling. I didn't see anything, no ghosts, I just felt this really bizarre, oppressive feeling of dread almost all throughout the house. I've never experienced anything like that before or since. But I could not remember where this place was. Then by chance I came across an article in an old pony magazine about Burton Constable Hall riding stables with a picture of them riding in this old riding school and I'm sure that's it, I'm sure that's the riding school I remember. I looked it up now and supposedly the hall is the most haunted house in East Yorkshire so I think I was definitely picking up on something there. I don't exactly believe in ghosts really but that place was seriously unsettling. I wonder what's underneath the house because a lot of 'ghostly sensations' often seem to be actually caused by underground rivers or streams. But obviously people did die there in a place like that that's so old and there seem to be a lot of stories about all these different ghosts, like supposedly a guy hanged himself in the cellar there, but who knows what's true and what isn't. My favourite part though is that one of the ghosts that has been repeatedly reported as being seen and felt there is that of a friendly black Labrador named Bunter who died in 1976 but still wanders around the place, which is adorable. I would love to have seen Bunter's ghost.
